1. How do I use PPI pre-funding?

 There are a number of ways PPI can be incorporated into your grant applications.

You can check on the James Lind Alliance website to see if your research question addresses a pre-existing priority for patients with a particular condition or within a certain treatment area. If it is, you can mention this in your application.

You can also consider ways of seeking input to shape your study design and develop your PPI strategy from relevant patient/public contributors e.g. through inviting them to a group discussion. Document responses and feedback, using the SPCR tool, as this will help with:

  • writing up the PPI section of the application
  • writing annual/milestone/funder/department reports if funded
  • keeping to track of successes and challenges
  • inform subsequent research/help others with what you’ve learned


2. Where can I get pre-grant PPI funding?

 The Research Design Service has limited funds to support development of applications to the NIHR, and can review the PPI section of your application.

If you have no access to funding for pre-grant PPI activities, you could seek PPI contributors to help on a voluntary basis (with travel expenses), making sure to explain that if the project is funded PPI will be costed in for their time.

Pre-grant PPI could be done remotely to reduce expenses (e.g. skype/facetime etc), according to the nature of the study.

 3. How much time should I allow for PPI?

 Each project is different, depending on what the appropriate levels of PPI are:

  • meetings should take no more time and preparation than any other research meeting.
  • recruitment times for your contributors will vary depending on the clinical theme.

Plan PPI into your research design and timeline so appropriate time and provisions are allocated to it. You may need to amend this plan during the study if more PPI is required to address issues, e.g. recruitment problems.
