\n \n \n \nSchool funded research, led by Professor Carol Coupland at the University of Nottingham and recently published in the BMJ, suggests that commonly used antidepressants, known as \u2018selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors\u2019 (SSRIs), are not associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes in people aged below 65.

\n \n \n \nCANcer, Diagnosis Decision rules (CANDID) was the first collaborative project within the School to involve all partner universities. The five year study, led by Paul Little from the University of Southampton, aims to use clinical information from 20,000 patients across England and Wales who visit their GP with possible symptoms of early lung or colon cancer.

\n \n \n \nThe 3D study, funded by the NIHR Health services and Delivery Research Programme, is aimed at improving the management of patients with multiple long-term health problems. The research has recruited more than 1380 patients in just six months in practices across Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow.

\n \n \n \nDespite antidepressant prescribing in primary care increasing since the financial crisis, a SPCR study shows that GPs have responded to the introduction of NICE guidelines and QOF measures that encourage more targeted use of antidepressants. Prescription of antidepressants in people with a first bout of depression has fallen by 12 percent between 2003 and 2013, from around 73% to 61%.
