Dr Artaza Gilani is a School funded Academic Clinical Fellow based a UCL's Research Department of Primary Care and Population Health, and working within the British Regional Heart Study (BRHS).
The BRHS is an on-going prospective cohort study which first recruited participants across 24 British towns between 1978 and 1980. It was set up to investigate the factors contributing to the significant variation in coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke in the United Kingdom.
"The BRHS seeks to determine the causes of these conditions, in hope of working towards preventative measures. This is especially important, given that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and as per the World Health Organisation, are estimated to represent almost 1 in 3 of all global deaths. Part of our current work in the BRHS is investigating a possible novel, independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases."
Published in Science on 12 April and entitled 'The Way I Am', Dr Gilani writes an insightful piece about how he has learnt to approach the interview process with integrity and authenticity.
