NIHR are delighted to announce the launch of three new funding calls as part of the NIHR Three Schools Prevention Research Programme. These calls provide significant opportunities to contribute to prevention research and capacity building across public health, primary care, and social care.
The NIHR Schools for Primary Care Research (SPCR), Public Health Research (SPHR), and Social Care Research (SSCR) – the “Three Schools” – have come together in this unique collaboration to support high-quality prevention research to improve population health and reduce inequalities in England.
They are now inviting applications to the following funding opportunities:
1. Prevention Research Project Awards – round 2
Up to £190,000 per project | Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 30th September 2025
For collaborative, cross-School Prevention research project proposals which address upstream determinants of health and wellbeing, with a focus on developing and implementing interventions that promote health, independence and well-being.
2. Prevention Follow-on Research Awards
£50,000–£100,000 per project | Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 30th September 2025
Open to existing or recently completed Three Schools award holders, this call supports follow-on activities to enhance, expand or translate research with a prevention focus, with the aim of informing national policy and practice.

3. Prevention Career Development Awards (CDA)
Up to £35,000 per award | Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 30th September 2025
Open to individuals at all career stages with a contract of employment with one of the Three School member institutions and seeking to develop their research capacity in prevention research. This award supports tailored career development activities to build a sustainable career in prevention research or as a practitioner-researcher.
