A research team including Chris Salisbury, Matthew Ridd, Marcus Jepson and Chris Metcalfe at the University of Bristol has embarked upon a study funded by the School that aims to address this. Partly inspired by Byrne and Long’s extensive study of General Practice in the 1970s, the study will collect 240 video recordings of consultations with linked patient/GP survey data across 12 different practices in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. A subset of the data collected will be used for an initial project to explore potential links between the ways that different treatments are recommended during consultations and patient enablement and subsequent adherence to those recommendations. The original dataset will be safely stored long-term at the UK Data Archive where it will be available for future research by bonafide UK researchers meeting pre-specified conditions including NHS ethical approval.
