The realist review, titled General practitioner workforce sustainability to maximise effective and equitable patient care, explores the conditions and mechanisms that allow GPs to thrive in the UK healthcare system.
This study is the first to explore how the way general practice services are organised affects GP workforce sustainability. It highlights that meaningful work, strong professional relationships, and opportunities for learning and development are central to GP retention. Conversely, challenges such as rigid systems, professional isolation, and poorly designed technologies can threaten workforce sustainability.
With pressure on primary care and GP shortages a growing concern, this research provides important insights for policymakers, practices, and health services aiming to retain GPs and improve patient outcomes.
