  • 1 October 2022 to 30 November 2023
  • Project No: 603
  • Funding round: FR5

In 2021, a Primary Care-specific group of patients and carers was established to support patient-focused primary care research at Exeter. The establishment of this group is in line with the proposed strategy for the Exeter membership department of the SPCR. It strengthens local primary care researchers’ ability to work with patients from the very start of research ideas to ensure that the research we do reflects what patients need. The group has:

Contributed to and developed research ideas in their infancy when meeting researchers at ‘PPIE ideas cafes’

Contributed to the framework for primary care PPIE at Exeter, to ensure this is fit for purpose for the research groups established here and members of the public wanting to become involved

Reviewed primary care research applications, including SPCR funding applications, for studentships, fellowships and research projects

Developed plans for expanding PPIE in primary care research

We are asking for funding to continue time and support from a dedicated staff member who is experienced in involvement and engagement of patients and the public. Core activities will be:

Organise and further develop PPIE training sessions and other development opportunities for researchers and the public on ‘working together in primary care research’.

Support growth of the primary care PPIE group through outreach to local GP surgeries and third sector (local interests and community groups), with a particular focus on establishing relationships with a diverse patient group.

Co-ordinate activities between the PPIE group and researchers, through the PPIE cafes and clinics as well as serendipitous connections

Provide advice and point of contact to support researchers to develop their confidence and skill in PPIE, as well as advice on PPIE plans in funding applications

Represent the Exeter membership department at SPCR-specific PPIE meetings and events, and facilitate Exeter patient involvement in central SPCR activities, to ensure that APEx is developing its’ PPIE offer collaboratively and sustainably.

Amount Awarded: £13,566
